Morning Shake!

So, when Kristin first came up with the Fabulous Friday idea, she mentioned the idea of sharing recipes that we love IMG_2461and use often in our respective lives. I found myself automatically laughing at the suggestion, as this would consist of me telling you how to cook rice, microwave a potato, or make a sack lunch of a sandwich, pea pods, and greek yogurt with frozen blueberries. I believe that I am cursed in the domestic area of cooking because ALL of the men in my family are amazing cooks. My dad (and mom), uncle, brother, and brother-in-law are extremely creative and impressive cooks. Sorry, Future Husband, looks like you’ll need to have that cooking thing down. Don’t worry, I bake a mean cookie!

However, I have recently found my way to a delicious, healthy, and filling breakfast option, which I’ve started including as part of my everyday routine. It keeps me full till lunch and helps me get fruits and veggies every day. It’s also AMAZING after a hard workout.

1 cup, packed, baby spinach

1 scoop of protein powder of choice

1/2 cup of plain greek yogurt

1/2-3/4 of a frozen banana

5 or 6 whole frozen strawberries

3/4 cup of frozen blueberries

1/2 cup of water

Blend well with whatever blender you have on hand. I recently got a NutriBullet and it is AMAZING! Enjoy!

Fabulous Friday: Family & Fern

Every 9/11, Nick puts on a pair of headphones, goes to a room by himself and listens to On The Transmigration of Souls by John Adams.

While I’m not quite as routine in my memorial, in recent years, I have listened to Fern by Zoe Keating, a beautiful, melancholy, but hopeful and inspiring cello masterpiece. I think back to where I was (anatomy and physiology lab at St. Olaf) and what was going on in my life (gearing up to spend a semester in Costa Rica for my first exposure to public health) and who was in my life (just about to start dating Nick, who was pretty sure he was not going to date me. After the first time we hung out, I, however, told him I had to marry him because he had an Italian last name and played guitar).

Today, I am listening and thinking of those things for which I am thankful. Things that make my life fabulous. Things that are here today but may be gone tomorrow.

Today, those things are my siblings, our spouses and kids and the awesome past weekend.

Today, I am thankful for the wonderful few days last weekend spent with my siblings and our families. The time the girls got to spend with their cousins. The time Nick got to be with another male doing manly things. The time we all got to regress to 6th graders.

Thanks, guys, for making my life fabulous.

Fabulous Friday: Der Rosenkavalier Trio

Kristin and I have decided to post something fabulous in our life every Friday. This week it’s my turn! FullSizeRender

I’ve been working on learning this AMAZING trio from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. It’s at the pivotal and heartbreaking point of the opera when the Marschallin releases her former lover, Octavian, to be with his new, youthful love Sophie. For those who don’t know opera convention: Octavian is played by a mezzo soprano. So if he looks a bit feminine… its because he’s played by a woman. Yep… its odd, but the blend of the three female voices is glorious.

Seriously… just wait for around 3:40.  Talk about SEHNSUCHT!
